In therapeutic work, it is essential to understand how different forms of discrimination and privilege intersect in a person’s life.
Intersectionality provides a framework for recognizing how race, gender, sexuality, age, disability, and other identities interact to shape lived experiences.
This short animated video offers a clear and accessible introduction to the concept.
Intersectionality reminds us that experiences of oppression are not simply additive, but transformative when combined.
In clinical practice, this means moving beyond single-issue frameworks and considering how overlapping systems of power may affect a client’s well-being, access to care, and sense of safety.
A trauma-informed and culturally responsive approach requires ongoing reflection on privilege, inclusion, and systemic barriers.
